Barbarous Gift For A Civil Serpent

Our office recently presented each one of us with a gift:

It may not look like one but it is actually an auto-scan radio which doubles as a pen holder (obvious, right?) It also has a 'magnetite' left foot to which you can stick paper clips so that they could be close at foot hand.

As usual, the moment I realised that the radio was made in a certain country, the first thing I did to get entertained was not to switch on the radio but to read the user manual. The manual said, 'Please change the batteries in time if the quantity of broadcasting station decrease, or the radio voice is faint, screaming or barbarous.

After all, a screaming or barbarous voice does not go very well with a civil serpent. I had a really good laugh. Many thanks to the office for a very entertaining gift.

All thanks to our employer, I've got an orange radio man, similar to yours. Maybe the color was used to differenciate different employment status? Thanks for pointing out about the magnetic left foot, I wouldn't let my watch go near it.

Who still reads the user manual nowadays?

IMHO, if this country really wants to remain as an economic superpower, she should first improve the quality of her products. Although she has succeeded in producing very competitively-priced products, my experience (and probably yours too) is that her products' reliability is an issue of concern.

Second, she must learn to use grammatically correct English. I am not expecting her to speak Queen's English but at the very least, the reader should be able to understand the message to be conveyed. It looks like what she's doing now is to translate literally word for word from a Chinese to English dictionary and making hilarious mistakes along the way.

If she continues to act this way, then she'll be nothing more than an SYT - 好看不好吃.

Woa... I take issue with your last statement Victor. What you mean SYT are 好看不好吃? Pls ok? you're making a general statement that offend all SYT who are 好看又好吃,ok? To put it bluntly, you can't use a bamboo pole to swipe down a boatful of people. I learned this from you one.

Give her (not the SYT) some time. Her command of English can only go up. A trainer in a course I once attended attests to the fact that many language schools have sprung up in that country, and it's a matter of time before they catch up with us Singaporeans. Watch the DRAGON or shall I say phoenix?
