Old Singapore Quiz (10) - Answers

Here are the answers to Old Singapore Quiz (10):

Q1. Where is this gate located? Provide the nearest road name.
A1. It is located near to Jalan Mempurong.

Q2. Name 2 nearby landmarks.
A2. Any 2 of the following landmarks would have been correct:
i. Bottle Tree Village
ii. Masjid Petempatan Melayu Sembawang
iii. People's Association Water-Venture (Sembawang)

YG got all the answers correct. But nobody could provide the answer as to why the gate was left standing when everything around it had disappeared. My 1983 street directory showed a Malay settlement used to occupy this location:

Isn't it a Queensland Bottle tree?

Uncle Phil, you are probably right. The Bottle Trees were imported from Australia at a cost of $30,000 each.

Hi Vic,
You do a great job with this particular post; lots of information and attractive pictures of the area. It's humorous too, comparing the tree to the lady in question. And I've never been there. Must check it out!
Cheers.

Thanks for the compliments, Andy. Yes, you should check it out if you haven't been there. There is a restaurant at Bottle Tree Village. Quite a nice place to have dinner to have dinner with your loved ones.

There's another Bottle Tree restaurant behind Khatib Station. Wonder if they are related. Anyway, the fruit trees being grown here are interesting.

roger, the two bottletrees are owned by the same group of people, i think. the one near khatib is the bottletree park; the one at sembawang is bottletree village. some of the staff working at the park used to work at the village.

the Bottle Tree Rest. site seems to be previously the homestead of the "Quah" family. Her surroundings looks familiar to me at least...
Would be good if this could be confirmed!
